I am a furniture designer/maker specialising in individual commissions and a limited series of production pieces. I also make prototypes and speculative one-off exhibition pieces. Since setting up my studio in 1979 I have produced work for private collections, interior designers, museums and architects. My clients include Yohji Yamamoto, Dinny Hall, Procorp as, Barclays Bank, Munkenbeck and Marshall and the Royal Museum of Scotland. In 1987/9 together with the architects Munkenbeck and Marshall I designed furniture and fittings for Yohji Yamamoto in London and New York, In 1996 I was selected to show work in the Crafts Council exhibition "Furniture Today" which toured the UK. The following year after an open competition I was commissioned to make two public benches for the original building of the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh
I rarely have a fixed design when making a speculative piece of furniture. The idea or feel of the piece is usually strong in my mind but it is the process of making and developing the piece which is what determines the works' final appearance. So there is an element of uncertainty in my approach which I like. Working this way allows me to control the tactile quality and proportion of a piece. Line and simplicity of form are what I want to achieve in my work. When I undertake commissions I will always try to produce an innovative piece of furniture as well as fulfilling the brief. |
